Robert Miron Retiring After 35 Years

Back

Syracuse, NY

Robert Miron, Chairman of Bright House Networks, announced today that he will retire at the end of the year after leading the company for more than 35 years. He will continue as a board member of Discovery Communications.

"Bob has been an amazing leader for Bright House Networks and for the cable industry as a whole. And one of his greatest accomplishments was his vision in 1986 that Discovery could become a successful network, bringing high-quality programming to current and future subscribers," said Donald E. Newhouse, President of Advance/Newhouse. "Our Discovery investment is of paramount importance to our diversified media company. Bob's continued participation as a director is highly beneficial for Discovery and vital for us."

Steven Miron, CEO of Bright House Networks, will assume responsibility for Bright House Networks. Nomi Bergman will continue to serve as its President.

"Bob has trained both Steve and Nomi to follow in his footsteps. They have developed into an outstanding team, and have proven themselves by building a strong management group. They are ready to carry the company forward on the same successful path as Bob," Newhouse said. "The industry has recognized both Steve and Nomi for their leadership skills by awarding them the prestigious Vanguard awards."

Miron said, “I have had a great career—more than 50 years in broadcasting and cable, with over 44 years in the cable industry...and I had a front row seat watching it grow from a 3-to-5 channel ma-and-pa reception service, to a full-fledged communications service that provides unlimited video choices, voice, and data to residential and businesses. One of my proudest accomplishments is choosing to make the initial investment in Discovery, and my long association with Discovery, helping it become the extraordinary success it is today."

John Hendricks, founder and Chairman of Discovery Communications, said "Bob Miron is one of the most astute business leaders in America and at Discovery we are so fortunate that Bob will continue to give us the valuable insight and intelligent stewardship that he has provided Discovery for the past quarter century.”

"Bob is the very best of partners and he continues to play a critically instrumental role on our Board in helping to shape Discovery's growth strategy in the U.S. and around the world. His enduring passion for the Discovery content mission has made a positive and lasting difference in the lives of viewers across the globe," Hendricks said.

Miron has been with Bright House Networks and its predecessor companies since their infancy, joining in 1966 and assuming the CEO role in 1974. Prior to that, he worked in various positions within Newhouse Broadcasting since starting his career in 1958 after his graduation from Syracuse University, where he now serves on their Board of Trustees.

Miron has been on the Board and Executive Committee of the National Cable & Telecommunications Association since the early 1980s, having twice served as its Chairman in 1989-1990 and 1997-1998. He has been a leading advocate of customer service, cable’s participation in education, as well as cable’s participation in local programming including news, weather, and sports. He has been a member or chairperson of many of the industry initiatives. He has also served as Chairman or Co-Chairman of the Music Licensing Committee for more than 25 years.

He currently serves as Chairman of C-SPAN and has been a past Chairman of Cable in the Classroom and has been a member of the Executive Committee of CableLabs for more than 20 years. He is currently a Vice Chairman of the Cable Center. He is also a past Board and Executive Committee member of the Walter Kaitz Foundation.

He has been inducted into both the Cable Hall of Fame and the Broadcasting & Cable Hall of Fame. He is a past winner of Cable’s Vanguard Award for Leadership, as well as CTAM’s Grand TAM Award, and the ACC’s President’s Award.
